Enjoy a fun event with the Filmmakers of THE LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE, Paul Glenshaw and Darroch Greer, the FACC Members, and Guests. Take a break to learn about the diverse fearless flyers who steered the United States into supporting the Allies when this country eventually entered World War I.
Filmed in the skies above France and the United States, THE LAFAYETTE ESCADRILLE tells the story of the American volunteers who flew and fought for France in World War I. It is an all-true, character-driven story of a disparate group of idealistic young men risking their lives for the ideals of France and civilization. Through archival footage and stunning photography of the places where the pilots trained, flew, fought and died, the documentary gives the viewer a thrilling and visceral experience of the early days of combat aviation. Never-before-seen photographs, letters and memoirs tell the only American story that covers the entire scope of World War I along the Western Front, from fighting in the trenches and driving ambulances to flying single-seat fighters. The sacrifices made by the men of the Lafayette Escadrille strengthened the historic bond between the sister republics of the United States and France as they laid the foundation of American combat aviation and the U.S. Air Force.

Meet the Filmmakers:
Paul Glenshaw’s aviation storytelling covers a wide range of media. He is a regular contributor to the Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine and was co-writer and producer of the PBS documentary Barnstorming. He is the author of To Swing Through the Sky, a theatrical concert commissioned and produced by George Mason University about the twin histories of jazz and powered flight. He is an exhibit curator/producer for museums, and is a longtime STEM educator. He was a member of the Wright Experience team during the Centennial of Flight in 2003. Paul is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, with a first career in art museums. He is practicing artist and a drawing instructor for the Smithsonian Associates.
